Royal Bank of Scotland
The Royal Bank of Scotland, initially as much an institution (like the Bank of England) as a commercial bank, has historically had the honour of designing Scottish banknotes- although that is no longer the case. More amusingly, RBS is responsible for the world's first ever overdraft (one William Hog, in 1728).
Like all the major banks, the Royal Bank of Scotland bank group is larger than it looks. The big addition was fairly recent, when in 2000 RBS took over NatWest, giving it a major presence in England. But further members include Ulster Bank (in Northern Ireland plus Eire), Coutts (big in private client and international banking), Direct Line (telephone financial services) and Lombard who deal in asset finance and factoring. The group overall employs some 110,000 people worldwide.
If you have a "One" account, a Tesco bank account or one of several credit cards with a non-banking brand name on it, you'll find that the Royal Bank of Scotland bank infrastructure is behind it. Similarly, under Direct Line you'll find Green Flag and Jamjar cars.
The Royal Bank of Scotland's corporate social responsibility programme made investments totalling a little over 33 million last year, primarily in financial awareness programmes, projects local to Scotland and projects targeting youth.
